Informal talks with nursing students revealed they value time with dental and medical students as they see healthcare moving towards an increasingly interprofessional and collaborative workplace. Students recognize the importance of working with other healthcare students before they enter the workforce, however, these opportunities are currently offered as face-to-face workshops once a year during the summer. Barriers like conflicting and busy schedules, as well as time and coordination to create workshops and cases, prevent more regular meetings.
NYU Nursing created a profile on Figure 1, a mobile and web app that healthcare students and professional to participate in meaningful conversations around patient care. Figure1 is particularly popular among registered medical and nursing students. While popular, NYU was not leveraging the tool to facilitate student dialogue or observation around medical cases. Curious what traction a post would generate, we created a verified profile, posted questions around an interprofessional case from our archive, and within 24 hours our results were:
This engagement results are thrilling considering the minimal amount of time and resources spent on the development and marketing of these cases and the sustainability of the approach.
